Joy shares, “I have always known that I wanted to work in a helping field and when my cousin became a social worker, I was inspired and amazed by how impactful social workers can be for their clients and the community. When I first began my master’s degree in Social Work, I always thought I would help those with dementia or Alzheimer’s. However, after my experience working on an oncology floor during one of my first social work jobs, I grew to love the population. I was able to see the amazing strength in my patients and getting to know them and work with them during their hospital stay was always something that stuck with me. Receiving a cancer diagnosis affects not only the client, but their families and friends in more ways than one and it is an honor to work with this population. Especially after having a close family member diagnosed with cancer, and seeing all of the difficulties that arise with a diagnosis, this work is very close to my heart. ”
