Mary shares, “In my work at CancerCare, I am most motivated by helping those affected by cancer make the most of a hard, life-changing situation. Although we socially give the message that cancer survivors are “strong” and “warriors,” it’s important that those with cancer and their loved ones are given the time to not be okay, to be vulnerable, and to grieve what has been lost. My hope is that I and CancerCare more broadly can contribute to a culture of broadening our social understanding of cancer beyond catchy words, ribbons, and tropes.”
